Survivor Of Orlando Massacre Recalls Mateen Sparing Her & Friend Since Black People Have “Suffered Enough”

Patience Carter was having the time of her life with her friends Tiara Parker and Akyra Murray who happened to be cousins. They, too were caught off guard by the sudden round of bullets going off inside of Orlando’s Pulse nightclub on Sunday and Carter recalls the terrifying moment when the horror began. “I was so confused. I was like, ‘Wow, a club would do all of this just to get people to leave their club?”‘ she said. “I thought it was a BB gun at first, or the DJ playing some sound of gunshots. I didn’t think they were actually real gunshots.”

Instinctively, Carter says she dropped to the floor and began moving toward the exit. Murray, who had ran over o the bar, spotted her friend and followed her t the exit. They both realized that Parker was missing, so they both risked their lives and ran back inside of the club to find her. Once they were reunited, they ran into the bathroom in order to seek refuge, but were met by gunman, Omar Mateen, almost immediately and soon, Carter realized that she and her friends had been hit.

After Mateen returned to their stall, he asked if the were any Black people present. Someone confirmed that there was and the gunman replied, “I don’t have a problem with black people,’ Mateen allegedly said. ‘This is about my country. You guys suffered enough,” so he ceased fire. Murray ended up bleeding out from her injuries and during interviews, Carter sobbed with regret as she believes that her friend would have survived if she hadn’t re-entered the club with her.

Daily Mail reports that Carter overheard some of Mateen’s phone calls with police during the stand-off. She said that he at some point, he “pledged an allegiance to ISIS and said he was carrying out the shooting to stop America from bombing his country.”
