The Oscars were particularly controversial this year as many viewers criticized the award show for its lack of diversity. Social media even went as far as to create the #OscarSoWhite hashtag just to get the point across and let’s not forget about the celebs like Jada Pinkett Smith, her hubby Will and even Spike Lee boycotting the show altogether!
Well it looks like The Academy got the point loud and clear because they have announced the new people invited to join their class and let’s just say it has become way more inclusive. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the 683 people invited to join the Academy which included some of your favorites like Idris Elba, Ice Cube, America Ferrera, Anthony Anderson, Loretta Devine, Morris Chestnut, Gabrielle Union, Regina King, Michael B Jordan and more!
According to the LA Times, this new class will be “the largest, most diverse class ever” as it is reported that 41% of the new class is comprised of people of color. If you didn’t know prior to this major change The Academy was 93% white and 92% male.
