Amandla Stenberg Reveals She Dropped Out Of ‘Black Panther’ Auditions To Give Dark-Skinned Actresses Time To Shine

Amandla Stenberg was almost cast to play T’Challa’s tech genius sister Shuri in Black Panther, but she decided to back out of the audition process. Why? The “The Hunger Games” actress said she didn’t think her look would be a good fit for the project, which is being celebrated for its representation of dark-skinned women.

“I was in the audition process for it, then I decided to not continue with the process because I thought that it wouldn’t be right for me as a biracial, light-skinned American to be playing [the role],” she told ESSENCE.

“I don’t think visually it [would’ve] make sense and it wasn’t appropriate for me to go after that role,” she added. “‘Black Panther’ is one of the only films that we have that has darker-skinned representation. That’s what was so beautiful about it.”

Thoughts, #Roommates? Did sis have a point? Did she make the right move?
