Angela Ponce Of Spain Becomes The First Transgender Miss Universe Contestant

Last night the 2018 Miss Universe Pageant took place in Thailand, and the show was full of memorable moments. One moment was Angela Ponce making history as the first transgender contestant in the pageant’s history.

According to Time, although Ponce, Miss Spain 2018, didn’t make it into the pageants Top 20, many from all over are celebrating her participation.

She said, “What an honor and pride to be part of the history of @missuniverse. This is for you, for those who have no visibility, no voice, because we all deserve a world of respect, inclusion, and freedom. And today I am here, proudly representing my nation, all women and human rights.”

Transgender contestants have been eligible to participate in the pageant since 2012.

According to NBC News, shortly after being crowned Miss Spain earlier this year, Ponce said, “If my going through all this contributes to the world moving a little step forward, then that’s a personal crown that will always accompany me.”

Catriona Gray, of the Philippines, was crowned as the 2018 Miss Universe winner with Miss South Africa and Miss Venezuela coming in second and third.
