Officer Scot Peterson was on duty at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week when the devastating shooting happened. However, he did nothing to help make the incident turn out differently.
According to the New York Post, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said that Peterson was armed, in uniform and “clearly” knew what was taking place inside of the school, but did “nothing” to intervene.
Israel said that security footage showed Peterson “arrive at the west side of building 12, take up a position and he never went in.”
Israel continued to say that Peterson should have “went in, and address the killer.”
“After seeing video, witness statements and Scot Peterson’s very own statement, I decided this morning to suspend Scot Peterson without pay, pending an internal investigation,” said Israel.
Following the suspension, Peterson chose to resign from his position.
Footage will likely not be released unless it is subpoenaed as part of the criminal case against Nikolas Cruz.
There are still two other deputies that are facing investigation. Israel said, “’I’ve restricted two of our deputies as we dig deeper into this, take statements and make a decision to see whether or not they could have done more, should’ve done more.”
A total of 17 people were killed and 15 were injured in the shooting that took place on Valentine’s Day.
