Hey, Roommates! Get your notebooks out, because a blood donation center out of the U.K. just took us to school, y’all!

#GiveBloodNHS was recently accused of being racist after they requested black donors. The organization received so much backlash that they felt compelled to give everyone a Twitter lesson on blood transfusions. As it turns out, they were requesting black donors, because many Black people have a rare blood type.

They began their rant with “So, people keep asking, ‘Why do we need more black blood donors? Isn’t everyone’s blood the same? You’re racist!’ ISSA THREAD.” Next, they explained that there are more than 30 blood groups/ types. The familiar A, B, AB and O group is just one of them. Blood can also be positive or negative which is another blood group!

Then, the organization broke down how certain blood groups are more or less common in different ethnic groups.

With that being said, there is a very rare subgroup called Ro that is 10 times likely to be found in a Black person than a white person and is found in people with sickle cell anemia.

The organization stressed the importance of these patients needing to have good matches or else their bodies can develop resistance to any transfusions they receive.

“Why, you may ask, don’t we just say we need Ro blood then?” Give Blood asked. “Well, most people don’t know they have Ro blood, unless they donate and we tell them. It just doesn’t work if we say we need Ro donors, because then you’ll say, What the heck is Ro?!”

Take heed to Give Blood NHS’s lesson, because you can potentially save more lives and save them much faster!
