DJ Khaled On Jay-Z's 'I Got The Keys' Verse: "It Was Like Listening To 'Dirt Of Your Shoulder' For The First Time"

DJ Khaled On Jay-Z’s ‘I Got The Keys’ Verse: “It Was Like Listening To ‘Dirt Of Your Shoulder’ For The First Time”

DJ Khaled has been holding the game down with monster anthems like “I’m So Hood” and “All I Do Is Win” for over ten years now. It’s almost as if all he knows how to do is make hits! His latest, “I Got The Keys”, which features #JayZ and #Future, has got everyone looking for shade after the Roc Nation CEO had the nerve to spit some straight fire in this mid-summer heat!

If you’re wondering just how Khaled got Jigga to hop on the anthem, well, he pretty much acted on faith. On the Breakfast Club, Khaled described the day he had met up with Jay at the studio where he played his record for him.

“I kinda glanced and looked at him and he was bobbing his head. Then, after the hook came off, he was bobbin his head (repeating), ‘I got the keys, keys, keys’,” Khaled said. “When the instrumental came on, I already saw him start rapping in his head! He was like, ‘Yo, leave this for me.'”

The next day, Jay laid down his verses and history was made! Later, they recorded the video and it became a humbling moment for DJ Khaled. He said it was “important to the game” that they worked together on that project.

Khaled believes that the only reason why the song was so effective is because everything Jay said was incredibly true. Who else can say they’ve lived, acquired and married the things Jay Z has? Nobody!
