Last week news broke that three of UCLA male basketball players were arrested for allegedly shoplifting in Hangzhou while the team was there for a tournament.
On Monday, people familiar with the situation revealed more details.
According to The Washington Post, Donald Trump was also in China last week for a state visit. He reportedly talked to China’s president, Xi Jinping, and asked that he help resolve the matter.
A source revealed that Xi Jinping promised to look into the situation, and said that UCLA freshmen, LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill will be treated fairly.
Trump’s Chief of Staff, John Kelly has reportedly been talking to Chinese officials, UCLA coach Steve Alford, and the families of each player.
So far charges have reportedly been reduced and the case is “proceeding toward a resolution.”
Ball, Riley, and Hill were arrested for allegedly shoplifting from a Louis Vuitton store near their team’s hotel. They were benched during the season-opener against Georgia Tech on Saturday and were not permitted to return to the U.S. with the rest of their teammates.
