Fab Melo, 26, a former standout at Syracuse University unfortunately passed away in his sleep Saturday night.
According to Yahoo Sports, Melo passed away at his family’s home in Brazil. He reportedly went to sleep Friday night and did not wake up Saturday morning.
At the moment the exact cause of death is unknown.
Melo led an impressive basketball career; he was the Big East Defensive Player of the Year during his sophomore season. He helped lead his team to the number one seed in the NCAA Tournament during the 2011-2012 season.
He entered the NBA Draft in 2012, where he was the selected 22nd overall by the Boston Celtics. He went on to play for other teams before signing with a Brazilian team in 2014.
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim confirmed his death on Twitter. He said, “I’m very sorry to hear about the passing of Fab Melo. He was a kind, genuine person who was committed to doing his best while he was at Syracuse. Our staff and his teammates were fortunate to have had the opportunity to know Fab. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
