Frank Ocean Calls the GRAMMY Rewarding System “Dated,” Says It Lacks Representation

Last month, #KanyeWest made it clear that he would not be attending next year’s GRAMMY Awards unless the academy would nominate #FrankOcean for an award. The singer won two back in 2013 for his #ChannelOrange album, but considering how epic #Blonde was this summer, why wasn’t he nominated in the first place? Many thought that it was either shade from music big wigs or that Frank’s team missed a deadline, but neither is true.

In a new interview with the New York Times, Ocean reveals that he purposely declined to submit his album for consideration and is sort of “sticking it to the man” by doing so. Speaking of the way that the GRAMMY awards system is set up, Ocean says, “That institution certainly has nostalgic importance and that “It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.”

In addition to what he feels is a lack of representation, Frank Ocean also feels that the rewards system is late! “I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated,” he told the New York Times. “I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience.” Oop!

“Blonde” was the last album that Frank needed in order to fulfill his contractual obligations with his record label. With that being said, he’s free and could be going independent on some Beyoncé x Parkwood Entertainment type ish. At least let’s hope so!
