Japanese Billionaire Dropped $110.5 Million On A Basquiat Painting

#Roommates save your arts and crafts projects from school because you never know how much it’ll be worth in the future…if it’s bomb of course! A 1982 painting by Jean-Michel sold for an astonishing $110.5 million at Sotheby’s auction of contemporary art Thursday night.

“Tonight, Jean-Michel Basquiat entered the pantheon of artists whose works have commanded prices over $100 million, including Picasso, Giacometti, Bacon, and Warhol,” said Gregoire Billault, head of Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Department in New York.

The painting “Untitled” was purchased by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa and he couldn’t be happier.

“When I saw this painting, I was struck with so much excitement and gratitude for my love of art,” said Maezawa.

He plans to showcase the painting at his museum in Chiba, Japan and hopes the piece “brings as much joy to others as it does to me.”
