As many of you know, Jelani Maraj, brother of superstar rapper Nicki Minaj, is currently on trial on a charge of predatory sexual assault against a child for allegedly raping his stepdaughter back in 2015. By the end of the first day of deliberations yesterday, the Nassau County jury on duty for Maraj’s rape case was unable to reach a verdict!
Despite the victim’s graphic testimony as well as that of her younger brother and Maraj’s semen that was found in the groin area of the young girl’s pajamas there seemed to be insufficient evidence for the jury to convict Maraj. Alternate juror John Labau tells Newsday that even though he thinks Maraj is guilty, he would have acquitted Maraj based on a lack of evidence.
Nassau Assistant District Attorney Emma Slane told the jury to believe the victim’s story as it was backed by DNA and two heavily weighted testimonies. The defense attorney told jurors that this was all a plot for Maraj’s ex wife to extort him for $25 million and that the woman planted the semen on the girl’s underwear.
If Maraj is convicted he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
