Katy Perry Learns A Lesson On ‘The Power Of Black Women’s Hair’

Katy Perry recently sat down with activist DeRay McKesson and she addressed past accusations of cultural appropriation… like that time she rocked cornrows in one of her music videos. In the interview, the singer explained that she only realized what she did after a friend sat her down to explain the outcome her actions.

“She told me about the power of black women’s hair, and how beautiful it is, and the struggle. And I listened, and I heard, and I didn’t know,” Perry told McKesson. “And I will never understand some of those things because of who I am… but I can educate myself, and that’s what I’m trying to do along the way.”

Katy also explained how the clapback culture on social media doesn’t always help the situation. “Sometimes it takes someone to say, out of compassion, out of love, ‘Hey, this is where the origin is,” she said.

#Roomates, do you feel we need to more conversations like this on this issue? (Hint, Hint, maybe with the Kardashians?)
