Michael Brown’s Mother, Lezley McSpadden Announces Her Run For Ferguson City Council

Thursday marked four years since the passing of Michael Brown. The following day, his mother, Lezley McSpadden announced her run for Ferguson’s City Council.

According to NBC News, McSpadden announced her candidacy along Canfield Drive, which is near the exact spot her son was killed back in 2014.

She said: “Almost four years ago to this day, I ran down this very street, and my son was covered in a sheet. I learned to walk again, and this is one of my first steps.”

McSpadden said that she plans to place her focus on three issues when it comes to her city. Those issues include community policing, economic equality and health care for young children in Ferguson.

When it comes to those who may question if she’s qualified for the job, she responded: “If a mother had to watch her son lay on the street for four hours, and watch our community be completely disrespected by the people we elected, what would you do? You would stand up and you would fight, too.”

Aside from announcing her run, McSpadden is also asking Missouri Governor, Mike Parson to reopen the investigation into her son’s killing.

Three days prior to McSpadden’s announcement, Bob McCulloch, the prosecuting attorney in St. Louis County who handled the Brown investigation, lost a primary challenge to Wesley Bell, a black Ferguson councilman.
