One Person Injured After An Austin-Bound Package Explodes In A FedEx Distribution Center

A package containing nails and shrapnel that was reportedly bound for Austin, TX exploded at a #FedEx distribution center near San Antonio last night. One employee suffered a concussion from the blast.

This is the fourth package-related bombing and the fifth overall bombing related to Austin in just the last week. It’s unclear whether or not all of the incidents are isolated or related, but it is suspected that these bombings are targeted towards minorities.

Authorities believe that there is a “serial bomber” at large and fear for the safety of residents, considering that the bombings are becoming more intricate.

“With this tripwire, this changes things,” said Christopher Combs, special agent in charge of the FBI’s San Antonio division, during a news conference on Monday after news of Sunday’s bombing. “It’s more sophisticated, it’s not targeted to individuals … a child could be walking down a sidewalk and hit something.”

The FBI has sent 350 special agents and bomb squads to Austin in the event another bombing occurs. Austin Police Chief Brian Manley tells residents to pay close attention to any suspicious device, whether it be a package, a bag, a backpack or anything that looks out of place” and to call 911 instead of approaching these items.
