Actress Tessa Thompson has recently signed on to portray well-known jewel thief Doris Payne.
Many may be familiar with Payne, as her criminal record has spanned over six decades.
According to Variety, Codeblack Films will start the project after obtaining Payne’s life rights. Thompson will produce the untitled film alongside Codeblack’s Jeff Clanagan.
Thompson took to social media to express her excitement about the project and said, “I’m screaming that this dream is coming true. She is a deeply fascinating woman. So pleased to bring this story to bring this story to the screen with Codeblack and Lionsgate. Beyond grateful.”
The story of Doris Payne was highlighted in the 2013 documentary “The Life And Crimes of Doris Payne.” Payne, who is now 87, has a criminal record that dates back all the way to the 1950’s. Since a young girl, she has been known to steal countless amounts of jewelry.
While filming the documentary, Payne was caught stealing a ring from a Macy’s department, causing the film to end with her behind bars.
Through interviews, Payne has recalled her many arrests and has admitted to having used “20 aliases, 10 Social Security numbers, and nine dates of birth.”
