The NBA Releases A Memo Reinforcing The Rule That Players And Coaches Stand For The National Anthem

With the NBA preseason officially underway, the organization sent out a memo on Friday to all teams reinforcing the rule that players and coaches stand during the national anthem.

According to ESPN, the memo was distributed by deputy commissioner Mark Tatum and it advises the teams that “the league office will determine how to deal with any possible instance in which a player, coach, or trainer does not stand for the anthem.”

The memo also states that the teams “do not have the discretion to waive” the rule that players, coaches, and staff stand for the anthem.

Tatum suggests that teams may address the current political environment by having both players and coaches address the matter in a pregame address at their first home games.

“This could include a message of unity and how the team is committed to bringing the community together this season,” the memo states.

Other suggestions included a tribute video or public service announcement that shows “team leadership speaking about the issues they care about.”
