The Rise and Fall of Bobby Shmurda --as told by Chewy

The Rise and Fall of Bobby Shmurda –as told by Chewy

Who can remember when “Hot N*gga” came out? It was Summer 2014’s anthem and the Shmoney Dance became the designated two-step. Ackquille Pollard may have first stepped onto the mainstream hip hop scene as Bobby Shmurda, but in Brooklyn, he answered to his childhood nickname, Chewy.

Okay so y’all know that Bobby Shmurda and some of his GS9 family have been behind bars pending trial following an indictment for the past year and some change now. Well GQ got to talk with Bobby about everything going on and honestly, according to the interview, it seems like Bobby was so close to making it out of his street lifestyle but he just wasn’t quick enough.

Here’s the tea! Just a heads up, We’re going to be referring to Bobby Schmurda as “Chewy”  until this cup is empty:

The story begins with Chewy trying to buy some weed from his weed man, who he identifies as Pluto. During his visit to Pluto’s, some guys held Chewy at gunpoint asking where Pluto lives. During their interrogation, Pluto’s door opened and the guys shot him dead and proceeded to raid Pluto’s apartment for drugs.

“They shot him right in front of my face,” Chewy recalls now. “When they shot him, I turned my head to the wall, like: I don’t know nothin’, I ain’t see nothin’. They grabbed me into the house. And then they had the gun to my mouth. They were like: ‘Where the drugs at?’ I’m like, ‘Listen, I never been here before. I just came for some weed. I don’t know nothin’ about nothin’.’ ‘Stop fuckin’ lyin’! You wanna die, too?’ I’m like, ‘I do not wanna die, but I don’t know where no drugs are.’ It was like a fucked-up predicament.”

After they took what they came for, the looters told Chewy that hey would kill him if he moved.

Keep in mind that Chewy’s recollection of the alleged situation happened prior to his viral filming of “Hot Nigga.” He said within two months after seeing his friend get shot and killed in front of him, he and his close friend Chad “Rowdy” Marshall wrote a whole mixtape. They chose “Hot N*gga” and “Shmoney Dance” as their favorites but can you believe they paid some neighborhood kids just $300 to shoot the video that would make him an instant internet Hip Hop sensation within days!?

“Lotta new guys coming out are sound-alikes,” producer Sha Money XL told to GQ. “This was something that didn’t sound like anything. They’re coming in with their own lingo—I’m hearing new words I ain’t never heard in the streets. And they had a swag with ’em that was like: Okay, this is a new era. This is the next generation, clearly. I was just mesmerized by the whole persona. They were looking like the New York that I know. A lot of artists don’t capture New York no more, but here’s someone in the streets of Brooklyn, in their neighborhood, giving you that raw look, how it really looks.”

While Chewy is basking in his new found stardom, the plot continued to thicken — Chewy, his older brother, and some friends (the ones we learned about from “Hot N*gga”) met in a vacant lot and solidified their crew’s persona as GS9. According to Chewy the young men weren’t blood related, except for Chewy and his brother but they belonged to an unspoken brotherhood. They gave themselves new family last names: the Shmurders and the Shmoneys.

So back to the superstar situation! Chewy ended up getting booked for all of these fancy shows and club appearances and even at one point had a sit down with Rick Ross to discuss Chewy joining the MMG family.

The “Hot N*gga” song and visuals is said to be a major key in the downfall of GS9–along with their already lengthy rap sheets.

Alright so BOOM! Sha Money XL, the big time producer who plays a role in putting 50 Cent on, began to work closely with Chewy –getting him in the studio and more organized as an artist in the industry. He allegedly was pushing Chewy to leave the street life alone and focus on his new career as Bobby Schmurda. It even got to the point where the two fought over it. Sha wanted Chewy in the studio more and Chewy repeatedly questioned why he was being kept from his friends. After the umpteenth attempt to keep Chewy focused Sha gave Chewy an ultimatum: stay in either LA or Miami to finish the album or Sha is walking away.

Well…Chewy didn’t hold up his end of the bargain.

While all of this is going on, Chewy is still living this double life and soon it was all going to catch up with him.

In December it was announced that 15 members of GS9 had been arrested. Chewy was a part of that crew and police were calling him the ringleader of the “gang”. They were being pinned for allegedly murdering Bryan Antoine, an alleged member of their rival gang “BMW” (Brooklyn’s Most Wanted.)

So now Bobby was not only headlining club flyers, he was also headlining the indictment report for the murder and guess what the N.Y.P.D used as evidence against him…. his very own song, “Hot N*gga.”

So here Chewy was, allegedly gang banging and living the street life when he decided to put his art in a song, just to reach stardom and have it taken away from him in the same breath. It was literally like a rise and fall happening all at once.

As far as the GS9 crew is concerned, two of the members have been sentenced 98+ years, and 50-to-life.

Sha also told GQ that he feels like Chewy’s affiliation to GS9 wasn’t necessarily the reason why he couldn’t leave the hood even if he wanted to, he says it was his loyalty to his community that kept him back. See in Brooklyn, although gangs come and go and stem from different things, it is said that some kids are forced into the “lifestyle” because of their allegiance to BK in general.

So basically in one hand you have a young man trying to keep up with his Brooklyn life, the only one he knows and in another he was a young man trying to make it out of the hood.

Most would think that once you go viral and get rich and famous that you would settle down and try and get right but unfortunately for Chewy, those two lives weren’t colliding too well–leaving him stuck behind bars for the last almost two years. He basically didn’t see 2015 and still has a long road to look forward too with his trial.

But of course Mr. Shmurda is still a hustler and isn’t letting his time in jail deter him from the bigger picture. He says he’s working on a “fiction” Novel about his life and his experiences but for all intents and purposes, he’s going to classify its genre as fiction.

Anyways, Chewy’s story ends with an encounter GS9 had at the studio with some police in plainclothes. It’s weird because Chewy had just left he studio moments before the studio was raided and had a talk with Sha on the elevator and Sha was telling him he needed to get out of the way because all eyes were on him at the moment. The studio actually happens to be the same studio Tupac was shot at the first time.

Whats even more ironic is he says he ran into Busta Rhymes at the studio also. Rhymes was supposed to hop on the elevator with him but there was no room so just be for the doors closed Busta yelled out to Bobby, “You got to be safe out there, mon.”

According to GQ when cops raided the studio, “Sha Money says that he, his engineer, and three Quad Studios employees immediately complied. Everyone else—all the GS9 kids—scattered and hid. “Some turned into Batman, some turned into Spider-Man, climbing the walls,” Sha Money recalls now. “Some tried to turn into Invisible Man and hid between walls.” The N.Y.P.D. searched the entire building. They didn’t find the last man—Rowdy—until seven in the morning. All the while, Sha Money sat on the ground with his hands cuffed. (He was not arrested.)”

Chewy unfortunately has already spent more than 465 days behind bars at Rockland Correctional Facility where he is in protective custody and is only allows 75 minutes outside of his cell a day. He was rumored to only be a one hit wonder and it wasn’t because his music wasn’t the next thing to take over popular rap it because would not be awarded the opportunity to do any more music for a long long time.
