#Timbaland is one of the most genius musicians the entertainment industry has ever seen. With all of the success and accolades that he’s garnered over the years, no one would ever suspect that he was silently suffering from depression and drug addiction.
In an interview with #RollingStone, the super-producer reveals that his addiction to OxyContin developed after he abused a prescription he was given. Timbaland suffered from lingering nerve damage as a result of a gunshot wound in his teen years and began abusing the drug in his thirties just to ease the pain. Soon after, his chart success began to decline and that sent him into a depression.
“Music is a gift and curse,” Timbaland tells Rolling Stone. “Once you’re not popping, it plays with your mind. The pills helped block out the noise – I’d just sleep all day. I remember Jay-Z told me one time, ‘Don’t do no more interviews’ – because I was saying crazy s**t.” The producer went on to admit that he blew through a lot of money and attributes his behavior to his failed marriage.
Thankfully, he decided to make a change although it took a near-fatal overdose to do so. “All I can tell you is that there was a light. I woke up trying to catch my breath, like I was underwater,” he recalled. “But through that whole thing I saw life – I saw where I would be if I don’t change, and where I could be if I did.”
Today, Timbo is sober and is in a loving relationship with his girlfriend Michelle.
