The Trump administration is proposing slashing the food stamp program and replacing paper coupons and EBT cards with meal delivery kits.
According to CNN, White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney proposed the new idea, which would cut food stamp funding by more than $213 billion, on Monday. He descried it as a “Blue Apron-type program” that would affect households that receive at least $90 a month in food stamps.
Here’s how it would work… instead of getting your funds on the 1st of the month, families would get a box that the government says is nutritious and 100 percent USA grown and produced. The package would be called “America’s Harvest Box” and would contain nonperishable items like milk, juice, grains, pasta, canned meat, fruits and vegetables.
“USDA America’s Harvest Box is a bold, innovative approach to providing nutritious food to people who need assistance feeding themselves and their families — and all of it is homegrown by American farmers and producers,” Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said in a statement. “It maintains the same level of food value as SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] participants currently receive, provides states flexibility in administering the program, and is responsible to the taxpayers.”
Many members of the Republican party have been vocal about downsizing the food stamp program, arguing that it’s too large and full of fraud.
This proposed idea is a part of Donnie’s fiscal 2019 budget blueprint and it has sparked a lot of mixed reviews. What are your thoughts, Roommates?
