#TSRPositiveImages: HBCUs Come Together For 1st National Speech & Debate Tournament Of Its Kind

It’s been 10 years the since release of the movie “The Great Debaters,” but the film in still inspiring students and colleges to see the value of debate education and young black people speaking their truths!

According to reports, Wiley College — the inspiration behind the film — recently held an HBCU Speech and Debate Championship Tournament, the first of its kind! It was a three-day event where students from Howard University, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T State University, Texas Southern University and Bethune-Cookman University debated issues like criminal justice reform and social justice.

Last year, Wiley College received a grant through the Charles Koch Foundation to create a HBCU League so it’s awesome to see it all come together!

Denzel Washington was also honored at the event for his work in the film and donating $1 million to help revive Wiley’s debate team back in 2007.
