A police investigation has revealed that a #TraderJoe’s employee who was believed to have been killed by a gunman during an intense standoff Saturday at a #LosAngeles store was actually killed by an officer’s bullet during a shootout with the suspect.
“I am truly sorry,” said Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore in a news conference about the death of employee #MelydaCorado, according to CNN. “It is unimaginable the pain of the Corado family. We share the pain today.” Moore said Corado was exiting the store as suspect #GeneEvinAtkins was entering the store and that’s when she was struck by LAPD gunfire.
Police were after Atkins because he allegedly shot his grandmother and kidnapped a 17-year-old girl then fled in his grandmother’s car while firing shots out the back window at officers. Moore said officers returned fire once he crashed the car and ran toward the store while still firing at officers.
He now faces 30 charges, including one count of murder and six counts of attempted murder, though it is not clear if the charges will change due to the new revelation in the investigation. Atkins bail has now been set at $9 million and he is supposed to be arraigned today.
We’ll keep you updated on the latest, #Roommates.
