Twitter Makes BET CEO Debra Lee Its First African American Director

CEO and Chairman of BET, Debra Lee, has just been named as one of the newest board members at Twitter! This move comes as the social media giant has been experiencing blacklash for its lack of diversity as well as struggling with bringing new users to its site.

“Thrilled to be joining the @twitter board,” Lee tweeted on Monday. “It’s transformed the media and the world like few other things in history (and continues to)!!” Debra Lee is more than qualified for this job, honey. She’s has served as BET’s CEO for close to a decade and prior to joining BET, Lee spent five years as an attorney at Washington, D.C.-based Steptoe & Johnson.

A list of her accomplishments include the Vanguard Award from the National Cable & Telecommunications Association and the Woman of the Year Award from Women in Cable and Telecommunications. Lee earned her bachelor’s degree from Brown University, a master’s from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a law degree from Harvard. How YOU doin’?!

With things like Black Twitter taking over the Internet, adding Lee to Twitter’s board was a very smart move. Its clear that she will be able to influence how this huge social media conglomerate can cater better to African Americans as well as other people of color. Good luck, Debra!
