Two New York City police officers have been indicted on first-degree rape charges after reportedly forcing themselves on an 18-year-old woman. According to reports, the victim was in custody for marijuana possession at the time of the alleged rape. Sources says she was handcuffed and the incident took place in the backseat of a police van.
The officers, 37-year-old Eddie Martins and 32-year-old Richard Hall, turned themselves in for arraignment on Monday and both insisted that the sex was consensual.
“It is incomprehensible that two veteran NYPD detectives would allegedly commit such an outrageous act,” Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said in press release. “They took an oath to protect and serve, but allegedly violated that oath by raping a young woman who was in their custody. We will now seek to hold them accountable for this flagrant betrayal of public trust.”
Martins and Hall were arraigned on a 50-count indictment including sexual assault, kidnapping and bribery charges. They have both pleaded not guilty and are currently suspended without pay.
Roommates, we’ll keep you posted on more details from this case.
