Issa Rae’s hit show “Insecure” has been the talk of HBO week after week and honestly it’s because it’severything TVs been missing! For those who haven’t been blessed enough to watch the show, Insecure follows after two best friends and their struggle to find themselves in a society that thinks it already has them figured out. Season one wrapped up Sunday evening and its no surprise why it was renewed for a second seasonits genius!
Can we just talk about how TV needed Insecure though? First of all if you were a fan of the show Girlfriends, you understand the nostalgic feeling of watching black women figure out their place in the worldfrom the workplace to the dating world to self love. And if youre a fan of Atlanta, you would appreciate the in-your-face sarcasm. If youre the only, or one of very few black people in your office, Insecure is for you.
If you arent caught up, minor spoiler alert in 321!
Okay so Issa and Molly are lost in the sauce but thats okay because middle class black women can relate to most if not all of their struggles. There are a lot of Issas and Mollys in the world who probably feel alone in their fight to make it throughlike the only black employee in the office who gets stuck with the awkward race questions. Or the woman who finds a flaw in every single man she dates but then complains shes single. Insecure ultimately tugs at the heart strings of women who are insecure with themselves because of the world around them.
One thing about black girl magic is that it is exactly what it saysmagicsomething you cant explain, takes behind the scene work, but is amazing to see. We hear how much representation matters when it comes to the youth seeing people like them on TV and the same is true for twentysomethings and the 30+ group. Insecure brings that representation that America can learn fromyes even white America.
Long story short, if you want to get your life, give your mind a nice amount of stimulation, have a controversial topic to debate on at dinner, need some inspiration, a good vent, and/or a good laugh but still some truth, yall know what to watch! Did we mention that its a FUBU show? Yes! The main character, Issa (Issa Rae) is the brains and beauty behind the show along with Larry Wilmore.
Season 2 needs to hurry!!
