‘Atlanta’ Star Brian Tyree Henry Cast As First Openly Gay Superhero In Marvel’s “The Eternals”

#Roommates, if you happen to be a Marvel fan, then this news is definitely for you. Fresh off his role in the Academy Award-winning film “Joker,” “Atlanta” star Brian Tyree Henry is set to make history, as he has just been cast as the first openly gay superhero in an upcoming Marvel film.

Despite “Atlanta” still being on hiatus, series star Brian Tyree Henry has been incredibly busy—and his latest role will firmly cement his place in film history. As reported by @Shadow_Act, Brian has been announced to play the role of Phastos, the first openly gay superhero in Marvel’s upcoming film “The Eternals.” He will also be part of a couple and his love interest will be played by actor Haaz Sleiman.

The news was revealed by Sleiman during recent interview with LGBT media outlet New Now Next. While giving a few details about the film, he confirmed that his character will be married to Brian and they will also have a child together. Additionally, they will reportedly share an on-screen kiss—which makes them the first same-sex couple in the Marvel universe to do so.

Sleiman also spoke very highly of Brian and what fans can expect from such a historical on-screen depiction of an LGBT relationship:

“It’s a beautiful, very moving kiss. Everyone cried on set. For me, it’s very important to show how loving and beautiful a queer family can be. Brian Tyree Henry is such a tremendous actor and brought so much beauty in this part, and at one point I saw a child in his eyes, and I think it’s important for the world to be reminded that we in the queer community were all children at one point. We forget that because we’re always depicted as sexual or rebellious. We forget to connect on that human part.”

Although anticipation for the film is high, fans will have a bit of a wait, as “The Eternals” isn’t slated to hit theaters until November 6th.
