Benny Boom Named New Director of the Tupac Biopic

Now we all know how dope N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton” biopic was as it broke records and remained #1 at the box office for weeks. This of course put the pressure to create films on the other artists that represented the west coast around that era.

Nonetheless, earlier this year it was revealed that Tupac’s biopic was already in the works and director John Singleton was the man to bring the movie to life. Unfortunately, back in April the film was placed on hold before Singleton completely dropped the project. He said, “It’s a very intimidating because, like I said, you just want to get it right. I think the picture is not going to be good unless it’s offensive to some people.”

Now it’s looking like the film may actually see the light of day. Popular music video director Benny Boom, who is known for shooting videos such as Busta Rhymes “Touch It”, Cassidy’s “I’m Hustla”, K. Michelle’s “V.S.O.P” and much more, has been named the director of the film.

He took to his Instagram and said, “I am blessed with the opportunity of a lifetime. Telling the story of this revolutionary, artist, visionary, genius, soldier! I will make him proud and uphold the legacy.”

Word on the street is that Benny Boom and the films production company Morgan Creek, have until the end of this year to pull it together and have the film in production before all of the rights to Tupac’s music heads back over to his mother, Afeni Shakur.

Now let’s not forget how a film can turn out without the rights to the music, pretty sure the Aaliyah biopic is still fresh in everyone’s minds.

Congratulations to Benny Boom!
