‘Black-ish’ Spinoff ‘Old-ish’ Starring Jenifer Lewis & Laurence Fishburne In The Works At ABC

It looks like there is yet another spinoff coming from the ABC hit scripted series “Black-ish,” and this time around the show will be centered around Jenifer Lewis and Laurence Fishburne’s characters Earl and Ruby Johnson.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC is currently developing “Old-ish,” and Kenya Barris will write the spinoff and executive produce alongside Laurence Fishburne, Anthony Anderson, Artists First’s E. Brian Dobbins. Jenifer Lewis will also have a producing role on the show as well.

Based on the synopsis, the show will focus on “Ruby and Earl as they give love a second chance. When they move to a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of L.A., they’ll meet characters who represent the old and new faces of the community as they try to make it work as a married couple. Again.”

This is the third spinoff of the hit series “Black-ish,” which was created by Kenya Barris. In 2018 the first spinoff, “Grown-ish,” debuted on Freeform, and the second spinoff “Mixed-ish,” premiered on ABC last fall.

“Grown-ish,” focuses on the college lifestyle of Yara Shahidi’s character Zoey Johnson as she embraces herself for adulthood. “Mix-ish,” explores the childhood of Tracee Ellis’ character Rainbow Johnson. Arica Himmel stars as the younger version of Rainbow.

Despite his overall deal with Netflix, Kenya Barris has remained very active with “Black-ish” and its spinoffs as others serve as the show’s showrunners.

As Kenya’s franchise continues to produce multiple spinoff shows, he is also seeing success under his deal with Netflix. As we previously reported, his debut Netflix series “#blackAF,” was renewed for a second season back in June. Most recently it was announced that he will be producing a documentary for Netflix on Civil Rights Attorney Benjamin Crump.
