Boxer Patrick Day Passes Away From Brain Injuries Four Days After Knockout

Roommates, we are sending our prayers to the family of junior middleweight boxer Patrick Day in the wake of his passing.

According to ESPN, Patrick, 27, unfortunately, suffered from a 10th-round knockout on Saturday, and it was announced on Wednesday that he passed away from his injuries at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

His promoter, Lou DiBella said in a statement, “On behalf of Patrick’s family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury. He was a son, brother, and good friend to many. Pat’s kindness, positivity, and generosity of spirit made a lasting impression with everyone he met.”

During Saturday’s fight, Patrick faced off against Charles Conwell on the Oleksandr Usyk-Chazz Witherspoon undercard at Wintrust Arena. He had been knocked down in both the fourth and eighth rounds of the fight. However, Patrick was also knocked down in the 10th round as well, causing his head to slam onto the canvas.

Celestino Ruiz, the referee of the fight stopped at 1 minute and 46 seconds.

Patrick was immediately taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, he never regained consciousness and suffered a seizure before slipping into a coma before undergoing emergency brain surgery.

Two days prior to his passing, Charles, Patrick’s opponent wrote, “I never meant for this to happen to you. All I ever wanted to do was win. If I could take it all back I would. No one deserves for this to happen to them. I replay the fight over and over in my head thinking what if this never happened and why did it happen to you. I can’t stop thinking about it myself. I prayed for you so many times and shedded so many tears because I couldn’t even imagine how my family and friends would feel. I see you everywhere I go and all I hear is wonderful things about you.”

We continue to send our deepest condolences to Patrick Day’s loved ones during this difficult time.
