More than a week ago, 17 lives were lost following a deadly fire that occurred in an apartment building in the Bronx area of New York City. Now Bronx-native, Cardi B is stepping up to help cover the costs as the families prepare to lay their loved ones to rest.
According to TMZ, Cardi will help cover both funeral and burial costs. She has also teamed up with The Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, which will help those who were affected by the fire.
Cardi said, “I cannot begin to imagine the pain and anguish that the families of the victims are experiencing, but I hope that not having to worry about the costs associated with burying their loved ones will help as they move forward and heal. I send my prayers and condolences to everyone affected by this horrific tragedy.”
As previously reported, the fire took place earlier this month, and initially, it was reported that 19 people were deceased as a result of the fire. However, that was later corrected and it was reported that a total of 17 people passed away. Some of the victims that passed also included young children and nearly five dozen others were injured due to the fire.
Officials say that the fire was caused by a malfunctioning space heater.
The cause of the fire led people to question the condition of the building, and ultimately one couple filed a billion-dollar lawsuit against the building’s landlords. They accused the landlords of failing to do multiple things when it came to the condition of the building, including, making sure the front doors of each apartment were self-closing. As well as ensuring that the smoke detectors at the subject premises and within each apartment at the subject premises were functioning.
