SUMMARY:

The Controller will plan and direct the accounting operations of The Shade Room, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company’s reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.

To be successful in this position, the Controller must be autonomous, creative and have experience working in a start-up/small business environment. This person will be able to immediately create efficient and effective financial processes and departmental budgets for the company. This person must also be comfortable with functioning as a team of one.

POSITION RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Manages the operations of the finance department to include accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll.
  • Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
  • Oversees the production of periodic financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Recommends benchmarks that will be used to measure the company’s performance.
  • Produces the annual budget and forecasts; reports significant budget differences to management.
  • Provides financial analysis, with emphasis on capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Works with external auditors and provides needed information for monthly and annual audit.
  • Oversees regulatory reporting, frequently including tax planning.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Proficient in accounting and tax preparation software.
  • Proficient in creating budget, profit/loss, and projection reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient user of QuickBooks and Bill.com.
  • Experience developing company and department budgets.
  • Experienced user of G Suite or similar software.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility in managing multiple responsibilities and assignments simultaneously; ability to meet deadlines; experience managing both urgent, short-term projects, and complex, longer-term projects. ​
  • Legal right to work in the US.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration required. Ten years or more of related experience required. Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred. Experience creating sales commission/bonus plans a plus. Experience in online media, magazine publishing, news and/or entertainment a plus.
