Early Life

Snoop Dogg was born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. in Long Beach, California, on October 20, 1971. He got his nickname from his mother, who thought that he looked like Snoopy from the famous cartoon, Peanuts. Snoop has always taken an interest in music and has participated in numerous events that his local church organized.

Snoop has been playing the piano and singing from an early age but made the switch to hip hop in the sixth grade. After finishing high school, Snoop was incarcerated for his association with Rollin’ 20 Crips, and a few drug possession charges.

He started his rap career with Nate Dogg and Warren G in a supergroup known as 213. His last musical endeavor before stardom was 213, which luckily tasted success with the help of the producer and ex-N.W.A, member, Dr. Dre, who later invited Snoop to guest star on his album, The Chronic. The Chronic was Dr. Dre’s debut solo album released in 1992.

Career

Snoop’s career blew up after he was featured on The Chronic. Snoop soon released his debut solo album shortly after entitled Doggystyle. Doggystyle is known as one of the most popular hip-hop albums of all time, praised for further developing the G-Funk style of hip-hop music.

Doggystyle sold over 800,000 copies within one week of release, making it the record holder for the fastest-selling hip-hop album. This would later be beaten by Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP. Doggystyle was awarded pristinely, by getting all five mics on “The Source,” and is included on Rolling Stone’s “most essential recordings of the ’90s.”

After the critical success of Doggystyle, Snoop Dogg released his massively popular 1996 album entitled Tha Doggfather. While it did not reach the numbers that Doggystyle did, it still cemented Snoop as a principal hip-hop artist. Dr. Dre didn’t produce this album, as he left the record label after a dispute with the record label owner, Suge “Sugar Bear” Knight.

In 1996, Snoop was featured in the movie Murder Was the Case as the leading soundtrack artist. The movie’s soundtrack went on to receive a double-platinum certification by the R.I.A.A. He also appeared as the main antagonist of the horror movie Bones as vampire Jimmy Bones.

Snoop Dogg later released Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told in 1998. He released No Limit Top Dogg for the No-Limit label. His sound has evolved from G-Funk and gangsta rap, into a far smoother rapping style.

He later appeared mostly as a featured artist on other famous artists singles, like 50 Cent’s hit single from his Get Rich or Die Tryin’ album, P.I.M.P.. Snoop is well known for branching out into reality television, acting, and many other endeavors.

He appeared in popular movies such as Starsky & Hutch, The Wash, and Training Day. Alongside his only wife, Shante, and their three children, Snoop Dogg had his reality T.V. show for E! titled Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood.

Snoop Dogg has also starred with the famous TV Chef Martha Stewart in a reality cooking TV show called Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. It gained praise from the community, marking Snoop Dogg as one of the most beloved A-list celebrities and gangsta rappers around. Unlike most of his colleagues, he ditched his tough-guy image for a more wholesome persona.

His next musical endeavors include everything from a reggae album to his latest release Bible of Love. Bible of Love is a gospel album. He is currently participating in a lot of different things, such as his collaboration with B-Real of Cypress Hill, Method Man, and Redman. He has his own Youtube channel, G.G.N., and a recurring series called G.G.N. News.
