Born Sean Michael Leonard Anderson in Santa Monica, California, Big Sean was raised by his mother and grandmother. However, he didn’t spend a lot of time in Santa Monica, as his mother and grandmother decided to move Detroit when he was only three months old.
He showed a keen interest in music as a young boy and started focusing more on his rapping during his high school years. He participated in rap battles on the WHTD hip-hop station every weak, showcasing his rhyming skills.
It was during that time that he took a leap that led to his thriving career. He went to the radio station where Kanye West was interviewing to throw a few freestyle lines. Kanye was immediately impressed. Big Sean left him a demo that led to him being signed to Kanye’s GOOD Music two years later.
Big Sean’s debut studio album, Finally Famous (2011), quickly reached the platinum status. His second album, Hall of Fame (2013), was certified gold, while his next two releases, Dark Sky Paradise (2015) and I Decided (2017), reached platinum again.
He’s collaborated with plenty of world-renowned musicians, including Lupe Fiasco, Pharrell, John Legend, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Tyga, Nas, Lil Wayne, and Ariana Grande. In 2016, he even released a joint album with Jhené Aiko (his girlfriend at the time), titled TWENTY88.
