Charlamagne tha God was born Lenard Larry McKelvey in 1978 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Life was rough in his childhood. He was only a teenager when he started selling drugs, and he was arrested for possession of marijuana and cocaine twice in his youth.
His third arrest was when he witnessed a shooting, and this time he spent 41 days in jail. His mother eventually paid his bail, and he got out.
Once out of jail, Charlamagne tha God started attending night school and soon landed a job as a radio intern. The rest is pretty much history.
In 2005, Charlamagne tha God met the television and radio presenter Wendy Williams and started working with her. Here is where he established himself as a rather provocative radio host. His unique approach to interviewing the guests caused a rift between him, the guests, and Wendy, and the two eventually parted ways in 2008.
Afterward, Charlamagne tha God joined The Breakfast Club as a co-host and started working together with Angela Yee and DJ Envy.
Charlamagne tha God has appeared on the comedy shows Guy Code and Girl Code and had numerous other TV appearances. He hosts the YouTube series Emerging Hollywood, and in 2017, he published his book Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It.

Rumor has it that there’s some tension between Charlamagne tha God and his The Breakfast Club co-host Angela Yee. The cause is his one-on-one interview with Gucci Mane (aka Guwop). Guwop attacked Angela, calling her names and taking jabs at her, while Charlamagne found the whole situation humorous. Rather than defend her, he just laughed it off. Is this a way to treat a coworker?
