Fetty Wap was born Willie Maxwell on June 7th, 1991 in Paterson, New Jersey. He grew up in Paterson where he was christened by his parents in the local church.
Some say that Wap’s mother was a talented musician herself, and he got his talents from her side. Unfortunately, Maxwell was born with glaucoma in both eyes. In an interview, he said that the doctors couldn’t save his left eye and that he is now wearing an ocular prosthesis.
He got seriously interested in music when he was 22 years old and that’s when his career as a rapper kickstarted.
At the start, Fetty Wap recorded songs as a solo performer. But he soon realized that he doesn’t want to only rap, but also sing as well. He was under the impression that the music scene needed something entirely new. Due to his money-making skills, Maxwell got nicknamed “Fetty” which is slang for money. Wap then came from performing a tribute to GuWop (Gucci Mane’s alias).
Fetty Wap debuted with his single Trap Queen in 2014 released on SoundCloud. The song was a huge hit with a platinum label and well over 100 million plays on the platform. Later that year, Fetty Wap singed a contract with 300 Entertainment and Atlantic Records.
Fetty’s next single was released in 2015. 679 was really well received by both fans and critics and ended up at number 4 on the Hot 100 countdown. The following single My Way ended up first on the Billboard Top 100. His debut album, released in 2015, hit the number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart.
