Jada Smith was born in 1971 in Baltimore, Maryland. Daughter of a head nurse, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, and a contractor, Robsol Pinkett, Jr., she was raised by her mother and beloved grandmother.
Jada showed great passion for the performing arts early on in her childhood, which is why her grandmother enrolled her in piano, ballet, and tap dance lessons. She recently opened up about her drug dealing days in high school and how she met and became close friends with Tupac Shakur at the Baltimore School for the Arts.
She attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and focused on pursuing an acting career. Moving to LA, she met LaVern Whitt who helped Jada get started in the movie industry.
Rise to Fame
Jada started her acting career in the ‘90s when she appeared in an episode of True Colors. She had a few cameos along the way before landing a recurring role and getting her big break on Bill Cosby’s NBC sitcom A Different World in 1991.
Her acting career took off with the movie Menace II Society, which led to her roles in films like Set It Off, Return to Paradise, and The Nutty Professor alongside Eddie Murphy. She rose to fame with her role as Niobe in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolution. Most recently, Jada’s appeared in Magic Mike XXL and Bad Moms.
In 2018, Jada, her mom Adrienne, and daughter Willow Smith started a web television talk show Red Table Talk on Facebook Watch. Among their guests were Will Smith, Cesar Millan, Toni Braxton, Ellen Pompeo, Jordyn Woods, and others.
