Early Life
Born Jason Joel Desrouleaux in Miramar, Florida, Derulo was passionate about music from a very early age. He started singing as a little boy and wrote his first song when he was only 8. He honed his singing and dancing skills at performing arts schools and practiced acting in various theater productions. In 2006, he was the winner of the Showtime at the Apollo music TV show.
It wasn’t until his teenage years that his songwriting caught other artists’ attention, propelling him into the universe of world-renowned musicians.
Derulo started writing songs for artists such as Diddy, Lil Wayne, Sean Kingston, Pitbull, Cassie, and many others. But he wanted to go further and write songs for himself, get on stage, and show what he’s made of.
He currently has over 50 million sold singles and 11 Platinums, including Ridin’ Solo, Want to Want Me, Don’t Wanna Go Home, Talk Dirty, Wiggle, In My Head, and his debut Whatcha Say. The single Want to Want Me became the most-added track in the history of Top 40 US radio, being added to 156 radio stations.
He has received many awards for his achievements, including five BMI Pop Awards and three Teen Choice Awards.
He’s also been dipping his toes in the movie industry. He’s starred in the musical fantasy movie Cats and will star in the upcoming biographical movie Spinning Gold.
