Jennifer Hudson | Childhood, Career, Relationships, & Hot Gossip

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson, an American singer/actress, is mostly recognized for her role in Dreamgirls. She first came into the public as one of the participants in American Idol in 2004. Jenifer Kate Hudson was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1981, and she grew up singing gospel, playing roles in community theater shows, and performing on cruise ships.

She didn’t have any formal musical education, and her talent and hard work alone were able to give her the chance to make it on the big stage, and she did.

Early Life

Throughout her childhood, Jennifer sang in many church and gospel choirs. She fell in love with singing. Her first serious endeavor in the music business was a Disney cruise ship. She sang there for a year, and many people told her that she had the potential to pursue a music career.

In 2004, she auditioned for American Idol and made it to the show. She made her way pretty far but was eventually eliminated. However, the show gave her valuable momentum and the exposure she needed, and many people gave her support after being eliminated.

A lot of people didn’t agree with Hudson being eliminated from the show. This sparked controversy and put Jennifer in the spotlight instead of the winner. Hudson found new opportunities through this hype and took advantage of them to skyrocket her career.

After American Idol, Hudson did a long concert tour visiting all major cities in the Midwest USA and did a couple of charity events on Broadway. In 2005, she auditioned for the musical Dreamgirls. Hudson was chosen over hundreds of other people for a main role.

Among other people who auditioned was also Jennifer’s American Idol rival, Fantasia Barrino, who won in the finals. Hudson had great success with her role in the film, particularly with her singing performance of the song called And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going. This performance brought audiences to their knees across the world.

For this role, Hudson received several rewards, including the Sammy Davis Jr. Award for Entertainer of The Year, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award. After that, she turned her focus on her music career and got into the studio to record her first-ever album.

The debut came out in 2008, and her self-titled release earned her a GRAMMY for the best R&B album. That same year, she continued her film career with a role in Sex in the City and in The Secret Life of Bees. In 2012, she published her first book, I Got This: How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down.

She also became a Weight Watchers spokesperson and started a clothing line. Subsequently, she worked on the Think Like a Man soundtrack and continued her film career with several different roles. Her latest roles were in Cats in 2019 and All Rise in 2018.
