Early Life
Born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, Lizzo lived with her family in Detroit, Michigan, until the age of 10, when they moved to Houston, Texas. She was interested in music from a very young age and learned to play the flute in sixth grade. Soon after, she started rapping and formed a group Cornrow Clique with her friends at the age of 14.
In 2005, Lizzo went to college, but dropped out soon after and found herself living in her car because her parents had moved to Denver. Three years later, she formed the band Ellypsea, but they called it quits in 2010. Her father passed away that year, so she moved with her family to Denver, where she formed the bands The Chalice and Grrrl Prty.
Career
After her music ventures with several bands, Lizzo decided to pursue a solo music career. In 2013, she released her debut studio album, Lizzobangers. In 2014, Time magazine named her one of the 14 best artists to watch. Her second studio album, Big Grrrl Small World, followed in 2015.
Although both albums were received with critical acclaim, neither reached commercial success. It wasn’t until 2019 that Lizzo achieved great commercial success, when she released the single Juice, prior to releasing her third studio album, Cuz I Love You.
