Early Life
Monica Denise Arnold was born to Marilyn Best and M.C. “Billy” Arnold Jr. on October 24th, 1980, in College Park, Georgia. She has a younger brother, Montez, two half-brothers from her mother’s side, Tron and Cypress, and one half-brother from her father’s side, Jermond.
Monica had humble beginnings, with her family dealing with severe financial struggles, especially so after the divorce of her parents. Music was her escape, and when she was no older than a toddler, she started singing in the choir of her local church.
Throughout her whole childhood, she was utterly devoted to music, her greatest inspiration being none other than Whitney Houston herself. When she was only ten years old, Monica became the youngest member of the traveling gospel choir Charles Thompson and the Majestics.
In her teens, she joined numerous talent-show and singing contests, and she’s won dozens of singing competitions. She was discovered by music producer Dallas Austin when she was only 11 years old, and she was offered a contract with Rowdy Records.
Career
In 1995, Monica released her debut album Miss Thang, which has been certified triple platinum and won her first-ever Billboard Music Award. Her most successful song to date remains The Boy Is Mine from her second album, which is considered to be among the most successful American singles in the history of Billboard. To date, Monica’s released seven highly successful albums, and Code Red, from 2015, is her latest.
She’s dabbled in acting as well. She has starred in various movies and drama series, including New York Undercover, Beverly Hills, 90210, All That, Boys and Girls, and Almost Christmas, among many others.
