Early life
Born in Barbados in 1988, Riri grew up in a three-bedroom bungalow, selling clothes with her father in a stall on the street. Impressive enough, she was even an army cadet in a sub-military program.
In 2003, she formed a trio with two of her school friends and they landed an audition with Evan Rogers who ended up inviting Rihanna to the US so she could record some demo tapes. The demos included the songs Pon de Replay and The Last Time which ended up being on her debut album.
Her audition immediately impressed Jay-Z, the recently appointed president and CEO of Def Jam, and she signed a six-album record deal with the label.
Career
Her debut album Music of the Sun peaked at number 10 on Billboard, but it’s her second album that really became a commercial success. A Girl like Me was Rihanna’s first album to be certified platinum.
One of the best-selling singles worldwide is Rihanna’s Umbrella, with over 8 million copies sold. The song also earned Riri her first ever Grammy award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
Rihanna became the first artist to have 100 million singles digitally downloaded, and even set the record for the fastest accumulation of 10 chart-toppers in the history of Billboard Hot 100.
