Ciara Reveals Her Hit Song ‘Goodies’ Was Intended For Britney Spears

Roommates, before we were 1,2 steppin’ with Ciara, we were all trying to hit ‘the matrix’ to her hit single ‘Goodies!’ Little did we know at the time, the song was actually intended for another star, Britney Spears. At least, that’s the tea Ciara spilled!

On her new radio show with Apple Music, Ciara got candid and shared some stories about her journey in the music industry and how behind-the-scenes antics can play a major part in what songs artists actually get to keep for themselves. One story in particular had us all confused when she revealed that her label mate at the time, Britney Spears, was supposed to be singing ‘Goodies,’ not her. Her record label at the time, Jive Records, reserved major hits for bigger artists. Ciara wrote on the record, but when politics got involved, she found herself also fighting for the same record she helped create.

Ciara said: “Not knowing that behind the scenes, there was a conversation about this song being potentially taken from me and given to an artist like Britney Spears, who was on the same roster as me.” She added: “I had to re-audition again, to be picked up and to be made a priority on the label. I did that, had a showcase, rocked it,” she said, explaining she was under the impression that she got the song. “Okay, boom, check.”

In hindsight Cici shared that had she lost the opportunity to perform the single, she would have been devastated and would have fought ‘tooth and nail’ to get it. The smash record was released in 2004 and ultimately launched Ciara’s successful career. Who would have thought that song was going to be for Brit, can y’all imagine that for real?!
