Whew, Roommates! Social media is popping OFF, asking, “What’s left?” after officials recalled 1.6 million eggs due to possible Salmonella contamination. Folks are flooding the internet with jokes, questions, and concerns while hoping that water doesn’t become the next item to disappear from their grocery lists.
According to CBS News, Midwest Poultry Services is recalling eggs after the company discovered a possible Salmonella contamination concern. The recall includes white-shell and cage-free eggs from the company’s Texas farms. The company distributed the recalled eggs to customers across six states between June 6 and July 3, according to the FDA’s recall notice.
The affected eggs carry sell-by or best-by dates ranging from July 20 through Aug. 17 and hit stores under several brand names, including Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire’s, County Morning, and Sunups. The FDA said smaller retailers also sold the eggs, but no other Midwest Poultry Services products appear in the recall. As of July 22, Midwest Poultry Services said it had not received reports of any illnesses linked to the eggs, per USA Today.
Midwest Poultry Services says its team uncovered the issue during routine environmental testing and a root cause investigation at its two Texas farms. The company immediately stopped shipping fresh eggs from those locations while it works through the recall. Officials also urge customers to avoid eating affected eggs and instead return them to the store for a full refund.
According to the CDC, Salmonella symptoms usually show up anywhere from six hours to six days after the bacteria are consumed. Most people experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps before recovering within four to seven days. However, children under 5, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness and may need medical treatment or hospitalization.

The reactions poured in as eggs joined the growing list of grocery staples following the recent recall of shredded iceberg lettuce tied to a Cyclospora outbreak.
