Whew! Erin Wheeler, once celebrated as Teacher of the Year at South Carolina Whitmore School, is now making headlines for a very different reason. Authorities arrested the 34-year-old special education teacher after she allegedly punched a child, sparking shock across the community. Law enforcement says the alleged attack did not involve any of her students and did not occur on school property, but the charges are serious.
According to the Lexington County Sheriffs Department, the alleged incident took place on November 27, 2025. Erin Wheeler reportedly struck the child in the forehead, then allegedly followed them into a bathroom and continued to punch them in the forehead and upper body. The child sustained bruises while attempting to block the blows. Law enforcement charged Wheeler with one count of unlawful neglect of a child, a charge that carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
During a Jan. 15 hearing, a judge set Wheelers bond at $2,500 and issued a no-contact order between her and the child or their family. The childs mother reportedly criticized the low bond, while Wheelers attorney called her a shining figure in the community. The controversy comes amid a sharp contrast to her public image just last year.
In March 2025, Wheeler was named South Carolina Whitmore Schools Teacher of the Year. At the time, principal Ebon Adams praised her deep compassion for her students and described her as an unwavering” advocate who earned the trust of families and colleagues alike. Her recognition highlighted her role on various committees and her contributions to helping students across the state succeed.
Since her arrest, Wheeler has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. The school issued a statement clarifying that the alleged incident did not involve any students or school property, and emphasized their commitment to reviewing the situation thoroughly. Lexington County court records indicate that the charge against Wheeler falls under a statute that criminalizes placing a child at risk or causing harm, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations. As the case moves forward, Wheeler faces the possibility of a decade behind bars if convicted.
