Botham Jean’s murder trial is underway in Dallas and the ex-cop who fatally shot him took the witness stand today to give her testimony. Amber Guyger, who wrongfully killed an unarmed Jean in his own apartment after claiming she mistook his apartment for hers, told prosecutors today that she feels like a terrible person, according to cnn.
“I feel like a piece of crap,” Guyger said through tears while on the witness stand as she testified in her own defense. “I hate that I have to live with this every single day of my life.”
She explained that she was scared the night of the murder. “I wish he was the one with the gun and killed me. I never wanted to take an innocent person’s life. I’m so sorry. This is not about hate. It’s about being scared that night.”
“I ask God for forgiveness, and I hate myself every single day,” Guyger said.
Other residents of the apartment building testified Friday about going to the wrong apartment and a Texas Ranger was questioned about the shooting reconstruction and use of force in the shooting.
It’s been an emotional few days in Dallas. Guyger testified she was still in uniform when she drew her service weapon and shouted, “Let me see your hands! Let me see your hands” to Jean.
She claims the silhouetted figure moved toward her in a “fast-paced walk,” and that she couldn’t see the person’s hands.
“When you aimed and pulled the trigger at Mr. Jean, shooting him in center mass where you are trained, you intended to kill Mr. Jean?” the prosecutor asked.
“I did,” she said.
The trial will continue Saturday with the Ranger, a defense witness, picking up his testimony.
