When it comes to political issues in Georgia, it’s always a serious matter. Yesterday Governor Brian Kemp was trending on Twitter after it was announced that he signed a nearly 100-page bill. According to NPR, the bill signed will make significant changes to election law, impacting voters, local election administrators, and the board that oversees elections.
Republican lawmakers in both chambers of the Georgia General Assembly passed the bill, “SB 202.” The bill makes updates that will drastically change Georgia’s absentee voting rules. It will add new identification requirements, moving back to the request deadline, and other changes. This resulted from more than 1.3 million Georgia voters who used the absentee voting option that allegedly raised Republican skepticism of a voting method they created.
The SB 202 bill also criminalizes individuals who pass out food or drinks to voters waiting in line, except for a self-serve water station. U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff shared a tweet speaking out against Governor Kemp’s actions. He wrote, “Tonight, Georgia’s legislature passed a bill brazenly intended to make it harder for Georgians to vote. Among its outrageous provisions: it criminalizes *giving water to voters who are waiting in line.” The tweet continued, “It’s no wonder Gov. Kemp hid behind closed doors while he signed it.”
Unfortunately, the news didn’t end there. Shortly after, it was announced that Georgia House Representative Park Cannon was arrested after she knocked on the door of Governor Kemp’s while he was signing the bill. The arrest, which was caught on Facebook live, quickly had Rep. Cannon trending on Twitter.
Once again, Senator Ossoff spoke out again in Rep. Cannon’s defense via Twitter. He tweeted, “I stand with Georgia State Rep. Park Cannon (@Cannonfor58), who was arrested and CHARGED WITH A FELONY for … for what? For *knocking on Gov. Kemp’s office door* as she tried to observe the cowardly closed-door signing ceremony for the voter suppression law.”
Attorney Benjamin Crump also shared a tweet in support. He tweeted, “GA state troopers ARRESTED State Rep. Park Cannon for knocking on @GovKemp’s door as he signed a huge voter suppression bill! She did her JOB as an elected official & they forcibly dragged her through the GA Capitol & into a police car! #WhatYearIsThis #JimCrowV2”
