From clashes over appointments, deposit fees, online bookings, and disputes over salon etiquette, salon violence is reportedly on the rise. Now, The Shade Room’s Justin Carter is taking a look several cases where disagreements escalated into physical confrontations, police calls, and even criminal charges.
One woman was accused of stabbing her braider. And another was accused of cutting off an 11-year-old’s fresh braids. What’s really going on and what’s changing inside of the beauty industry?

According to Carter, more and more hair salon appointments are being booked through hair videos going viral on social media. Not to mention, the appointments likely require an upfront deposit even when testing a new stylist. The appointments require putting a lot of faith in your stylist upfront, and risking things going wrong.
Tiffane Nicole of Style Mob University says she never had a customer try to get physical with her. But she’s had to reiterate her salon’s policies and procedures. Additionally, per Nicole, being able to do so and do so correctly starts with business etiquette and knowledge. And because a lot of modern hairstylists are blowing up from social media, they aren’t learning those fundamentals.
“They have no business education. They have no proper cosmetology education. So they’rejust going off of what they see on social media and just opening up. And they have no soft skills,” she said. “I think when you skip school, you skip the opportunity to build soft skills.”
Per Carter, recent hair salon disputes have escalated into clients being dragged by their hair. Additionally, incidents have spiraled into braids allegedly being cut out of someone’s head, stylists reportedly being stabbed, and subsequent charges and arrests.
