Social media users are lighting up timelines with theories about what happened to Nolan Xavier Wells.The 18-year-old was last seen on a boating trip to Horn Island, Mississippi, on July 4. Photos circulating online seemingly suggest the Black teen was kicking it with an all-white friend group during his disappearance. Local police have not made any arrests or suggested foul play. However, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed a multi-agency search for Wells is underway.
As mentioned, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department shared an updated press release via social media on Sunday. They affirmed that Nolan Xavier Wells is being considered missing. He’s described as 18, a Black male who weighs 180 pounds and stands 6 feet and 1 inch tall.
“Nolan was last seen on Horn Island [Mississippi] wearing blue, not black as previously mentioned, swim trunks, no shirt, and sunglasses,” the press release says.
Sheriff John Ledbetter reportedly said the last known sighting of Nolan alive was at 3 p.m. However, the department has not verified whether the teen is currently on Horn Island, per WLOX. The case is an active investigation.
Meanwhile, on social media, photos have circulated of Nolan Xavier Wells that include at least three other white males. When the sheriff’s department released day-of photos of Wells, they cropped them to exclude the white males. It’s unclear whether local police have questioned the other males pictured. An X-generated summary claims the “friends” returned to the mainland without him “assuming he caught another ride.” Allegedly, Nolan’s phone also turned up on the mainland.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the search efforts are being led by multiple agencies including the Department of Marine Resources, the Gulf Islands National Seashore, and the United States Coast Guard. Another agency that is helping with the search is the United Cajun Navy. A representative of the Cajun Navy gave some details about the search and could’ve happened to Nolan Xavier Wells in speaking to WLOX.
“There were some people that thought he might have wandered off to the middle of the island, maybe into that lake. We sent people up there today, and if he was barefoot, theres no way he made it up there,” Brian Trascher said. “Theres cactuses and a lot of thorny brush. He would not have comfortably been able to make it to the middle of the island. He probably wouldve turned around and went to the beach.”
As the search for Nolan continues, more details have surfaced about his personal life. He formally played football at Ocean Springs High School and currently plays in the wide receiver position at Southwest Mississippi Community College.
Aside from details about the 18-year-old, social media is sounding off about what might’ve occurred to him. Black internet users, in particular, have presented debates about Black people being in all-white spaces or the “token friend” in all-white groups. One incident that has been referenced is the case of Tamla Horsford, a Black mother in her 40s who was found dead in the backyard of a Georgia home following an overnight sleepover with an all-white group. The DA ultimately declined to press charges in the case.
