House Representative Park Cannon Speaks Out Following Being Released From Jail (Update)

Several people were angry yesterday following the arrest of Georgia House Representative Park Cannon after she ended up behind bars after she knocked on Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s door as he signed “The SB 202” bill. Many were upset that “Park Cannon” started trending on Twitter as folks called out the Governor over voter suppression.

As we previously reported, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff and Attorney Benjamin Crump spoke out against the senseless arrest. However, more details leading up to her arrest have been made available. According to CNN, Georgia State Patrol released a statement regarding Rep. Cannon knocking on the door. The statement said that at 6:33 p.m., Cannon “was beating on the door to the Governor’s Office,” and, when told to stop, moved on to the Governor’s Ceremonial Office door marked with a “Governor’s Staff Only” sign and knocked on that door.

The statement continues stating that after Rep. Cannon was instructed to stop knocking on the door twice to Governor Kemp’s press conference. The statement also claimed that she was warned that she would be arrested if she did not stop knocking. “Rep. Cannon refused to stop knocking on the door. Rep. Cannon was placed under arrest and escorted out of the Capitol.

Unfortunately, she was taken into custody at the Fulton County Jail but was later released. Rep. Cannon shared a series of tweets following her release thanking her supporters. She tweeted, “Hey everyone, thank you for your support. I’ve been released from jail. I am not the first Georgian to be arrested for fighting voter suppression. I’d love to say I’m the last, but we know that isn’t true. #SB202”

She continued, “But someday soon that last person will step out of jail for the last time and breathe a first breath knowing that no one will be jailed again for fighting for the right to vote. #SB202” Rep. Cannon continued calling out the issue of voter suppression and made it clear that she would not stop fighting for Georgia voters.
