It’s been quite the summer for Jamie as he reminded us why he is and always will be a national treasure. At the ‘2025 BET Awards’ in June, he accepted the Ultimate Icon Award at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, leaving the audience in tears. After being introduced by Stevie Wonder, Jamie opened up about his 2023 stroke caused by a brain bleed that nearly took his life.
Shortly after BET held a tribute to the stars we’d lost in the past year, Jamie took to the stage during his speech, saying:
“When I saw that in memoriam, I was like, ‘Man, that could’ve been me,'” he said, per USA TODAY. But I don’t know why I went through what I went through, but I know that my second chance, I’m not going to turn it down.”
Additionally, he shared how his daughter Anelise’sguitar-playing in his hospital room kept his vitals steady. “I realized God was in her guitar,” he told the audience. Jamie also gave a heartfelt shoutout to his daughter Corinne, who stepped up when he needed her most. Reflecting on his journey, Jamie told her:
“You’ve always taken a backseat to everything. But when you needed to drive it, you drove. And you made sure I was here. And at a certain point, I’m going to stop crying, but I’m not going to stop yet.”
